New Orleans funk band to play benefit concert

12-04-2008

Dumpstaphunk, a group the New York Times calls "the best funk band from New Orleans right now," will play a "Raise the Roof" benefit concert for Habitat for Humanity of Calhoun County on Dec. 5.

Dumpstaphunk was formed in 2003 by Ivan Neville, son of soul singer Aaron Neville and Ivan's cousin Ian Neville, son of Art Neville, a member of the Neville Brothers. This side project, named after one of Ivan's songs, morphed into what is now called New Orleans' best funk music.

Over the years, the members of Dumpstaphunk have played with a music legends from every genre, such as the Rolling Stones, Emmylou Harris, Trey Anastasio, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Matthews, and of course, the Neville Brothers.

"This is one of the bands that's top billing at the shows in New Orleans," said Taylor Stewart, who helped coordinate the concert. "They're incredible musicians and we're lucky to even have them up here in Anniston."

The show, which will be held at 318 and 326 E. 7th St. in Anniston, opens its doors at 7 p.m. and will continue until 11 p.m. A $25 ticket gets admission to the show, some beer and wine and light hors d'oeuvres. A $50 ticket gives admission to the show, a full bar and a full buffet. Any donation above $50 is appreciated.

"It's a good time to give," said Stewart. "Hopefully we can cheer up some people. It'll be funky and people will be dancing."

Tickets can be bought in advance or at the door. For more information, call the Habitat for Humanity at 237-3700.
