'Baby Mama': Great laughs, not so great messages
|
This movie had a fantastic ensemble — Tina Fey and Amy Poehler displayed great chemistry. It was reminiscent of The Odd Couple. Steve Martin would have been a great bonus except for one thing: Rather than Steve's natural humor, this role looked more like Steve playing himself playing a role. I don't believe this film did him justice. If you simply want to laugh and be entertained, this movie will do the trick. It has some cheesy parts, but in a good way. The one thing that bothered me was the tease of a battle between a big corporate business and a small independent one. There were many jokes involving this idea, and the plot seemed to dance around the idea, but it was never really addressed. It was disappointing because it left a subtle message that the small company should not even bother to compete with the big corporation. It created a false sense of harmony between the two that does not or rarely occurs in the real world. The movie also implies that although a woman can be successful in a man's world, she cannot be complete unless she has a child. Overall the movie was enjoyable and I would watch it again. It's like a sweet tart — sweet laughs with a sour message. |
