The annual Sikesville community pioneers day is to be at 10 a.m. Oct. 18 at Mt. Gilead Church, County Road 79, seven miles west of Wadley in Clay County.

The Piedmont High School class of 1968 is planning its 40-year reunion to be 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Tucker Center of the First United Methodist Church. Those interested are to meet on Oct. 10 for the PHS homecoming game. Tours of the old high school are to be at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 11. Free mini-workshops for beginners, presented by members of Alabenton Genealogical Society 1-4 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Ayers room, second floor, Anniston-Calhoun County Public Library, corner of 10th St. and Wilmer Avenue. Break for refreshments is 2-2:30 p.m. Topics include:

• Getting started, by Kitty Bussey, how to fill out genealogical charts/forms

• Where to find records, by Dot Bishop, courthouse: deeds, wills/estate records, vital records: birth, death, marriage records

• Early handwriting, by Dee Bass, how to read and understand the old forms/styles

• Census records, by Shirley Wilson, understanding the importance of the information and the mistakes

• Basic computer genealogy, by Deanna Slappey, where and what to look for in genealogy research.

Jacksonville State University Wellness-Anniston free health screening and education services, "Wellness Wednesdays," are to begin 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 1 (every Wednesday through Nov. 19) at the Bridge. The events and services are being offered by the JSU nursing department. Call 241-3399 for more information on the different screenings and services offered.

Jacksonville State University Wellness-Anniston "budget friendly meals program" is to be 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Bridge behind First United Methodist Church. The program is designed to show individuals how to minimize their grocery bills while maximizing the nutritional content of their meals. The Calhoun County Health Department Flu-shot drive-through clinic is to be 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 14 at Hill Crest Baptist Church, 5117 Post Oak Road. No appointment needed. The normal health department fee of $15 is to apply. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay. Bring Medicare and/or Medicaid card. National Repository for Tuskegee Airmen Artifacts is set to open 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Oct. 10 at Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center, 104 S. Elm St.; 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Oct. 11 at Tuskegee Airmen National Historic site; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 12 at Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center, 104 S. Elm St. in Tuskegee. A portion of the famous Moton Field, where the Tuskegee Airmen traine for World War II combat missions, has been restored and dedicated by the National Park Service as the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site. Anniston First Church of the Nazarene is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Church of the Nazarene at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at 4940 Saks Road.

The "Little Miss Red Ribbon Pageant," for girls first-eighth grades, is to be at 1 p.m. today at the Jacksonville State University, McClellan auditorium. The cost is $20 per contestant. The Community Action Agency of Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Calhoun and Cleburne Counties Head Start Program is now accepting applications for enrollment at the Ashland, Eastside (Talladega), Folsom and Munford Head Start Centers. Head Start is a free federally funded, quality child development/pre-school program serving 3- 4- and 5-year-old children from income eligible families, and children with disabilities. If your child turned 3-years-old on or before Sept. 1, and meets the federal income guidelines, he or she will be eligible to apply. Contact the following centers for more information.

The Dressbarn in Oxford is to host a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society with the sale of a plush dog "Chloe" beginning Oct. 1 through Dec. 15. The plush dog is to retail for $5 and dressbarn in Oxford will donate $2.50 from the sale of each dog to the American Cancer Society.

St. Clair Historical Society Fall festival is to be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 11. Follow Highway 231 south from Ashville courthouse out Greensport Road approximately five miles. Crafts of the 1820-1840 period, tour of John Looney House Pioneer Museum, fiddling, quilting, blacksmithing, candle dipping for the kids, barbecue and down home cooking to be available.
