Wellborn High School participated in May in the Calhoun County Scholars' Bowl at Jacksonville State University. The middle school team, made up of 7th- and 8th-graders, placed first in the contest, defeating Alexandria, White Plains, Saks and White Plains again in the championship game. Team members included right to left, all-star player Kayla Haynes, Parker Stanfield, Savanna Williams, and holding the first-place trophy is team captain Jessica Vingers. Coaches were Donna Vingers and Robin Woolsey.

The 9-12 grade team played in the afternoon championship rounds, but lost to White Plains and Weaver to take home a 4th place trophy. Team captain and all-star player was Mary Butterworth. Team members are left to right, J.R. Thomas, Mallory Adams, Kristen McGathy, Jamey Hamby, Brady Magouirk, Vincent Bolton and Mary Butterworth. Coaches were Donna Vingers and Robin Woolsey.

Patience Johnson, an Oxford High School student, has been selected for membership to The National Society of High School Scholars for superior academic achievement. The society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. She is a member of the Oxford High School band as one of the three drum majors for the season.
Za'Kasia F. Chatman was recently selected as a finalist in the Pre-Teen Alabama Academic and Enrichment Program to be held today through Monday at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel. She is the daughter of Candace Chatman and Antron Pope of Oxford. She is sponsored by John Christopher Salon & Spa, Doug's Ultimate Barber & Styles and Allynn's Wonderland Learning Center.
Steve Carroll of Oxford recently received an Associate of Science in physical therapist assisting degree from South University in Montgomery.
Local students named to dean's list for spring 2008 semester at Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tenn., are Mata Rodopoulos Burke, arts and science; and Lawrence Chen, school of engineering. Burke is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick F. Burke of Anniston. Chen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chien-Hua Chen of Anniston.
Two students from Cleburne County were honored recently during the University of Montevallo's Honors Day Convocation. Students were recognized for outstanding academic performance and for receiving scholarships.
Stephanie R. Ashley of Edwardsville received senior highest honors and was recognized as the recipient of the Alma Kelsey Steedman Graves Scholarship in Education of the Deaf and hard of hearing.
The Alma Kelsey Steedman Graves Scholarship is awarded to a senior or junior student majoring in education of the deaf and hard of hearing. The student must have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average and have shown definite potential to be an effective teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing.
Benjamin A. Bradbury of Heflin received junior honors and was acknowledged for receiving a valedictorian scholarship.
Delta Chi honors Jacksonville State Chapter with the Certificate of Achievement, Outstanding Campus Leadership award and the Outstanding Intramural Sports Program. The Certificate of Achievement is awarded to chapters and colonies that show noted improvement in overall operations and performance over the previous academic year. The headquarters staff selects only a handful of recipients for this award based on the collection of narratives and chapter.
Kimberly D. Carden of Roanoke was recently honored for receiving a freshman leadership scholarship during the University of Montevallo's recent Honors Day Convocation. Students were recognized for outstanding academic performance and for receiving scholarships.
Freshman leadership scholarships are renewable scholarships presented to outstanding high school students in Alabama who have displayed leadership qualities while maintaining high academic standards.
Chad M. Corrigan M.D., 1999 graduate of Oxford High School, recently graduated magna cum laude from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Corrigan is now an orthopaedic surgery resident at The Barroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he resides with his wife, Dr. Kristen Corrigan, a 2008 graduate of University of Alabama School of Dentistry. While attending the University of Alabama School of Medicine, he received several outstanding awards and scholarships; perhaps most honorary was his induction into Alpha Omega Alpha, nationally recognized as the most prestigious medical honor society.
Katie M. Gates, a 2005 graduate of Oxford High School, graduated cum laude from The University of Alabama with a bachelors of science degree as a biology major on Aug. 9.
She will begin a master's program at The University of Alabama this fall.
Katie has been accepted into The University of Alabama Rural Medical Scholars Program and will matriculate to The University of Alabama School of Medicine in 2009.
