The annual crappie fish fry

It's not every day that local politicians will admit to being full of crappie. After Monday's fish fry at the Calhoun County Administration Building they didn't have a choice. Calhoun County Commissioner Eli Henderson caught and filleted about 70 pounds of crappie and shared it with other elected officials for lunch Monday. Anyone working in the Administration Building didn't need a reminder about the lunch, the halls throughout the building smelled like batter fried fish. “We don't talk politics, we just sit down and enjoy each other,” said Henderson, who said the lunch was in its fifth or sixth year. Alabama football and Florida basketball replaced the usual conversation of taxes and annexation. Instead of being worried about hashing out budget plans, commissioners were more worried about budgeting a place on their plates for hushpuppies. Henderson said he had caught the fish over the past few months, filleted them and froze them until Monday when they were taken to the commission building and fried in canola oil in the parking lot. In addition to helping him get rid of the fish he caught, Henderson said the frying was a good excuse to meet some of the newly elected judges and school board members. “We don't always agree but it's good to sit down ... and be civil,” Henderson said. |
