WEDNESDAY’S LIST ... of beans ’n greens ’n other things:

^^^

MY CHURCH, Blue Mountain Baptist, may be a hot bed of political incorrectness.

Sunday, in observance of Memorial Day, we stood and sang “God Bless America,”pledged allegiance to the American flag and used “One Nation Under God,”and then we did the “Pledge To The Christian Flag”and the “Pledge To The Bible.”

Oh, we also sang “God Bless America”while we stood and waved the small American flags handed out before the singing.

All told, in our Memorial Day services, we used the word “God” no less than seven times. And I didn’t count the times the Rev. Truman Norred used in his message, “This Nation Under God.”

Our veterans stood and  named years served and in what branch of the military. Horace Youngblood, who was Navy in World War II, played a few of his memories.

We’re small in number, but every now and then do manage a “joyful noise.”

But just in case the Political Correctness Patrol is considering action against us, the blame is entirely on the shoulders of Sandra Triplett. Sandra is listed as music director in the church bulletin, but she really is the one who gets our programs together. She also sang “Blades of Grass,”a beautiful tribute to our war dead.

This one Sunday joins her Mother’s Day deal in my soft memories.

So there ...

QUOTABLE: “Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But then I repeat myself. – Mark Twain.

WHICH LEADS to a political cartoon someone mailed me this past week. A man is conducting an opinion poll with a woman standing on her doorstep.

Q –“What should we do with people who rely on government handouts, but are too lazy to work?”

A –“Kick them out of Congress.”

I have no idea who drew that one, just wish I could use it here.

And it also occurs to me you don’t hear many used car salesmen jokes anymore. Wonder if the people we elect to Congress have moved to number one there on the list of people we trust least ...

TOP TEEN: Say hello to Aliyah Salame, a senior at the Donoho School where she is a member of the National Honor Society, the French Honor Society, the Presidential Honor Roll, and Mu Alpha Theta.

Aliyah is also in Tri-M, the Peer Education Focus Group, and a National Merit Commended Student.

When Aliyah is not cracking the books, she’s a  player ... as in music. She’s in Donoho’s Advanced Performance Band, the Etowah County Symphony Orchestra, and the Etowah Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Somehow, she has also found time for Woodstock, Regional Medical Center, Knox Concert Service Committee, and the Interfaith Health Fair.

Graduating Summa Cum Laude, Aliyah heads for Duke University in the fall.

“Aliyah is very conscientious,” says Donoho senior counselor Jacqueline Gaines. “She has a strong sense of responsibility to use the opportunities that she has been blessed with. She always gives her best.”

Proud parents are Dr. and Mrs. Mohammed Salame of Anniston.

She’s one of our best ... so some applause is in order.
