Here’s a take on the break: An autumn pause has positives, negatives

Each year, students around the nation eagerly await the arrival of Spring Break. This is a time for them and their teachers to have a week to sit around, spend some time catching up on their school work or take a vacation. It also allows a time for them to rest their minds before the last few months of school. But is Spring Break not enough?

In recent years, many schools in the area and around the nation have adopted a new holiday, known as Fall Break. It serves the exact same purpose as Spring Break, but gives families a chance to take a vacation in the fall, which they normally don’t get to do. Another plus is that this is the only major holiday in the fall, whereas the other seasons have had major holidays for a long time.

The amount of vacation time that schools receive for Fall Break ranges from three days to a week or two. One of the schools that has added Fall Break to its list of holidays is Jacksonville, which will let out near the end of October. Andrew Harper, a student at Jacksonville, said he might spend his time off doing some house cleaning.

Some schools, like The Donoho School, have yet to catch on to this new trend; however, it might not be long before it is adopted there, too. Mrs. Hurd, principal of Donoho didn’t sound totally against the idea of Fall Break.

“It’s certainly a possibility, especially if all other schools in the area are doing it,” said Mrs. Hurd. Mrs. Hurd also said she doesn’t know a lot about Fall Break but has heard from other people who say they like it.

There are a few possible negatives with Fall Break, though. First of all, it adds more days to the end of the school year because a certain number of school days are required. With Fall Break being so close to Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, it may not be necessary. Also, many parents may not be able to get extra time off, so an extra vacation may be out.

Fall Break may never bring about the same excitement as Spring Break, but what student or teacher doesn’t need more time away from school? With loads of homework, tests, and stresses of everyday life, it’s nice to have another break.
