Fire that destroyed Wallace home ruled accidental

Updated 10:30 a.m.

CLIO — The fire that destroyed the childhood home in Clio of the late four-term Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace has been ruled accidental.

Ragan Ingram, a spokesman for the state fire marshal, said Tuesday investigators determined the fire started in the kitchen and was caused by an electrical problem.

The Sunday night fire gutted the home, leaving only brick walls.

Built in 1925, the home was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1975. The Wallace family sold the house years ago, and fire marshals said it was vacant when the fire occurred.
