Storms dropped more than two inches of rain on Anniston Sunday, capping off a wet weekend. According to data from the National Weather Service, 2.14 inches of rain fell at the Anniston Metropolitan Airport Sunday, with more than an inch falling between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The storm severely damaged two mobile homes and inflicted light damage on a house and church in southeastern Randolph County near the Georgia line, according to EMA officials. National Weather Service meteorologists in Birmingham said there was also a report of two trees down near the intersection of Hollingsworth Road and Highway 9 east of Jacksonville. There were no reports of injury, according to the weather service. Rain totals varied, but almost all of east Alabama recorded some rain. Over the weekend volunteers with the Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Network reported 3.26 inches in Oxford, .29 inches in Weaver, .71 in Anniston, .35 in Saks, 1.14 in Jacksonville, 1.32 in Roanoke and 1.46 in Munford. The gauge at the Calhoun County EMA office in Jacksonville received .95 inches Sunday and .15 on Saturday. EMA officials in Randolph County reported 2.16 inches Friday through Sunday. Ironically, July may make up for some of this year's drier months. Despite the rain, Anniston is still about four and a half inches behind the normal rainfall to date for 2008 and considered to be in "severe drought" according to climatologists. So far this year 25.16 inches of rain has fallen on Anniston, compared to 22.23 inches all last year. Sunday's storms pushed the city to almost four inches total for the month, about two inches above the normal month to date total for July. A surplus this month would help make up for June, which saw only .17 inches of rain instead of the usual 4.49. According to forecasts, the city's next best chance for rain comes Friday with a 30 percent chance of showers. |
