A worker was burned but later returned to work at Union Foundry when a storage tank caught fire early this morning. A crew from the Anniston Fire Department was called to the scene around 4:50 a.m. to battle what one firefighter described as a small fire. Union Foundry Assistant General Manager Tim Douty the fire was contained to a portable transfer tank containing an asphalt-based chemical and a thinner that mixes to form the finish for the plant's pipes. He said a male employee was treated and evaluated for minor injuries at the scene and was later taken to Regional Medical Center where he was evaluated and released. Anniston Fire Chief Bill Fincher said the man suffered burns on his hands and Douty said the employee returned to work at the plant on West 17th Street later this morning. The cause of the fire was still under investigation this morning and Douty said the employee was conducting routine start-up work before production began at 5 a.m. He said he did not know of there ever being a fire in such a tank. Fincher said the shop remained open and fire investigators were compiling their report around 10 a.m. today. Fire crews were on the scene for a little more than two hours. |
