Collis Smith, 48, of Heflin, was arrested by Oxford Police in connection with an attempted armed robbery early Sunday. Smith was charged with first-degree robbery. According to Oxford police, a man approached a tractor trailer parked outside of the Wal-Mart at 92 Plaza Lane in Oxford around 4:50 a.m. and asked for money. The victim, who owned the tractor trailer, said he had no money; the suspect then stole the tractor trailer's key from the ignition and ran away on foot, police said. Police said the suspect returned soon after and demanded money in return for the keys. The victim refused. Accord-ing to police, the suspect then took out a knife, broke the driver's side window and attacked the seat of the tractor. The victim, who was not hurt in the incident, exited the vehicle on the passenger side and the suspect then fled the scene in a small car. Thirty minutes after the incident an Oxford police officer pulled over a car matching the victim's description. The victim identified Smith and the knife allegedly used to damage the truck was found on Smith, police said. Smith was transferred to the Calhoun County Sheriff's department Monday morning and is being held on $10,000 bond. |
