Firefighters burn house in training exercise

Heavy black smoke around the car dealerships on South Quintard this morning was due to the controlled demolition of a dilapidated house on Wilmer Avenue. Anniston firefighters started the blaze at 413 Wilmer Avenue around 9 a.m. to help the Anniston Street Department clear a house that had been condemned. "This house has gone through due process and was slated to be destroyed," said Assistant Fire Chief David Collins. Two fire units were on scene spraying the blaze to keep it under control. A pump truck showered water down from a raised position on the hillside behind the house. "We get a little training out of it and they don't have to haul away as much debris," said Collins. The fire burned for more than an hour, leveling the house down to little more than a foundation |
