Forecast calls for cold temperatures tonight

Updated 10:41 a.m.

Calhoun County gardeners who have gotten an early start on planting need to batten the hatches tonight.

The forecast calls for a low of 29 tonight in Anniston, 28 in Piedmont and Lineville and 27 in Wedowee and Roanoke.

David Dubose, co-owner of Bloomin' Miracles nursery in Jacksonville, said any plants that have "leafed-up" are in danger of being damaged.

"To keep from shocking their systems I recommend covering them up," he said.

He suggested wrapping bed sheets or tablecloths around trees, bushes or perennials that have started to sprout leaves or blooms. The cold temperatures would likely damage the leafy tissue, he said.

He said any annual flowers would be damaged unless they were covered.

Dubose said he woke up to a heavy frost in Jacksonville with the thermometer reading 30 degrees.

He and his staff worked Sunday and continued their effort today to cover and move the plants around the nursery.

The official low for Anniston overnight was 32 degrees. The average low for today is 45 degrees, with the record set at 24 in 1968.
