TODAY IN HISTORY

The Star's Bill Edwards takes a look back at this date in history.

On this date: In 1876, Lt. Col. Colonel George A. Custer and his Seventh Cavalry were wiped out by Sioux and Cheyenne Indians in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Montana.

In 1950, war broke out in Korea as forces from the communist North invaded the South.

In 1962, the Supreme Court, in Engel v. Vitale, ruled that recital of a state-sponsored prayer in New York State public schools was unconstitutional.

75/25 YEARS AGO June 25, 1935, in The Star: An automobile accident last night on Pelham Road at Four Mile claimed the life of a recent Anniston High School graduate. Miss Elizabeth Wilbanks, 17, a popular member of the Class of 1935, was pronounced dead at Garner Hospital. Three companions were injured. Her funeral will be tomorrow afternoon; survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Wilbanks of 2003 Quintard Ave., and two brothers, William and Oliver Wilbanks. Also this date: Work has begun on a new stadium for the football field at Piedmont High School. Being constructed out of rock and concrete, the stadium when completed will have 12 rows, each of which is designed to seat 75. Additionally: In “Personals” from Oxford, we learn that Sonny Pace, James Curry and Denman Croley have returned from a week at Boy Scout camp at Camp Zinn, east of Anniston.

June 25, 1985, in The Star: “If the Calhoun County Commission gets its way, both the courthouse and nude dancers will get a new covering this year,” is the bright lede to an article detailing how the commission wants to put a stop to naked women dancing at local nightclubs — “We’re directly responsible for the morals of this community” said Commissioner Charlie Fuller — and how the commission has also opened bids from five companies seeking the job of repainting the courthouse. It’s been almost 25 years since that task was last done.
