On the same day the U.S. House recently passed a $649 billion dollar “defense” budget, President Obama put Social Security on the “deficit reduction” chopping block. Yet, Social Security has not contributed one penny to the deficit.

The same cannot be said for massive military expenditures and tax cuts for the wealthy. Obviously, killing people and further enriching the wealthy are far more important to this government than preserving the quality of life of the elderly, the disabled or the orphaned.

Social Security is a pay-as-you-go program that has never been funded by general tax revenues. In fact, the Social Security Trust Fund currently should contain a surplus of several trillion dollars. “Saint” Ronald Reagan and his Republican successors, however, used the surplus to reduce taxes for rich Americans, to fund necessary government operations and to make the budget deficit appear to be less than it actually was. Now what sits in the trust fund is a big, fat IOU that the Republicans and DINO (Democrats-In-Name-Only) Democrats don’t want to honor.

Mr. President, raise taxes on the rich, sponsor fair-trade legislation to protect and restore domestic industrial development and cut the war budget, but do not ask the least able to live impoverished lives to protect the wealth of those who created this mess. Do not help the Republicans destroy a government program that works.

Those who receive Social Security do not live lives of luxury. They spend their money and create far more jobs than any Republican “tax cut” scam has ever created. Social Security is funded by the sweat of millions of American workers who have earned the benefits that Republicans, Blue-dog Democrats and you, it seems, now want to steal from them.
