Alabama earmarks lost in struggle over budget

For about 48 hours in mid-December, it looked like Alabama was in line to get more than $130 million for projects as earmarks in the 2010-11 federal budget.

But in the end-of-the-year rush to pass spending bills and amid a newfound distaste for special local projects, a massive $1.1 trillion, 1,924-page omnibus bill was released on a Tuesday, caused an uproar on Wednesday, and was withdrawn by Thursday, before it ever even got a vote.
