The Gadsden Times reports that a man is alive after jumping from the Meighan Boulevard bridge into the Coosa River this morning.

Stan Gilbert walked down Meighan and slowly trekked up the bridge and over the rail. Passersby saw Gilbert jump and went in after him.

“I was just helping the guy out,” said Woody Burnes. “I first thought it was a wreck. I saw everyone looking around and then I realized that someone had jumped.

“I just went in to help him out. I was tired when I got there.”

The Huntsville Times reports that what looked like a DUI was very different.

An early morning police chase resulted in the driver being sent to the hospital after police realized the 21-year-old behind the wheel wasn't drunk, but was a diabetic suffering from hypoglycemia - or low bloodsugar, police said.

The Dothan Eagle reports on the trial of Steven Michael Capshaw. Capshaw is accused of plotting to have someone kill his wife Sandra Capshaw.

Attorney Kevin Butler, a lawyer with the federal public defender’s office in Montgomery, said the case against his client, Steven Michael Capshaw, is about how sadness and sorrow was manipulated for someone else to make money. Butler outlined his client’s defense Monday afternoon at the federal courthouse in Dothan.

Butler said that specifically meant Capshaw’s niece, Nathina Whitaker, suggested the murder-for-hire scheme to his client as an avenue to make money only shortly after he’d been asked for a divorce from his wife.

This odd case seems to have gotten even stranger.

The Birmingham News reports that there may be quite a few door to door census takers in the state.

Only 63 percent of state residences had responded to the 2010 Census as of Mon­day, a rate that lags behind the national response rate of 66 percent.

The Gadsden Times reports that, Shannon Kelley was named the Piedmont Police Department’s Officer of the Year.

Piedmont Police Chief Steven Tidwell said of Kelley, “He is a model employee. You never hear him complain and he is always looking for extra work to do. He has more or less singlehandedly supervised the renovation of the police department.

“He has worked more special detail hours than the rest of the department combined. He always volunteers and helps with any programs involving children and their safety. The Piedmont Police Department wouldn’t be where it is today without him.”

Electronic bingo halls in the Bessemer division of Jefferson County started reopening Monday after a county judge blocked raids by the Governor's Task Force on Illegal Gambling.

After a 40-minute hearing Monday morning in Bessemer, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Eugene Verin issued an injunction to keep the task force from raiding bingo halls in the Bessemer Cutoff until the Alabama Supreme Court determines who has command of the governor's task force.

These bingo halls shut down on Friday after raids had been threatened by Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. This should clear the way for these bingo halls to operate Alabama Supreme Court determines who has command of the governor's task force.

The Birmingham News reports "William Keel said an early look at the images shows that "some things we were sort of expecting to see are not there and we see other things we don't understand right away."

The Gadsden Times performed a survey that shows that about 85 percent of teenage drivers across Etowah County have texted while driving. Earlier this year, Jacksonville became the first city in Alabama to ban texting while driving.

Students from the eight public high schools in Etowah County — Etowah, Gadsden City, Gaston, Glencoe, Hokes Bluff, Sardis, Southside and West End — participated in a non-scientific survey conducted by The Gadsden Times.

The age of the students varied from school to school, but all except Sardis included only licensed drivers. At Sardis, students in the drivers education classes completed the survey, including some 15-year-olds.
