A look back at this date in history
Oct. 13, 1933, in The Star: “Several homes in the Anniston Country Club district have been reported burglarized during this week, but no official complaint had been registered at Police Headquarters by the victims. Women’s under clothes are said to be the chief item of loss among the victims.” Also this date: The Anniston High School Bulldogs’ squad of 22 men left at noon today for Talladega where they were to play Talladega High School this afternoon.
Oct. 13, 1983, in The Star: A final examination of what worked and what didn’t — and why — when Anniston residents planned and put on their centennial celebration in recent weeks appears in today’s issue. Although bright spots could be found, participation was woefully low, mainly because our local world in 1983 isn’t the same as it was in 1958 — when the community, concentrated in a smaller area, more attached to Noble Street and mostly undistracted by television, celebrated the city’s 75th anniversary. Opined John Kelly, a leading Anniston businessman and patron of the arts, “We didn’t have enough young people at the height of their intellectual abilities and professional careers involved. I’m 67 . . . I think the attraction for people like Sut [Mathews, centennial chairman for the past year] and Harry Rainwater was that they remember 1958 with such great pleasure. But we never did get the support from the 40- to 50-year-old groups like we did before.”
This is the Columbus Day holiday in the United States, as well as Thanksgiving Day in Canada.
