A look back at this date in history
Oct. 11, 1933, in The Star: The Downie Brothers circus unloaded this morning at the Anniston City Hall show grounds and immediately started to erect a city of tents. The subsequent circus parade was “very beautiful and enjoyed by thousands of town as well as country folk.” Cowboys, horses and elephants were part of the act. It was the first time in many years that a circus parade wended its way through the heart of the city, an editorial later noted. Also this date: “Thomas E. Kilby, Governor from 1919 to 1923, has no intention of running for Governor next year, he told newspaper men today. Governor Kilby said he had ‘no political ambitions.’” And furthermore: Fire which originated in the boiler room of Myown Creamery at 427 Noble Street early this afternoon did much damage to the building and resulted in water and smoke damage to fixtures and equipment.
Oct. 11, 1983, in The Star: A Cal-houn County chapter of VOCAL — Victims Of Crime And Leniency — was organized in a meeting last night at the courthouse. One of the organizers is Beth Howell, whose daughter, Rebecca, was murdered in 1982 by James Harvey Callahan, a criminal who was on probation and is now on death row. Also this date: The Anniston Jaycees will set up their Halloween haunted house at Crowan Cottage this year and donate part of their gate receipts to the historic Woodstock home’s restoration fund.

1958 — The lunar probe Pioneer 1 was launched; failing to go out as far as intended, it fell back to Earth and burned up in the atmosphere.
