A look back at this date in history

10-10-2008

Oct. 10, 1933, in The Star: In a sworn statement printed as a public message, W. I. Greenleaf, owner of Profile Cotton Mills in Jacksonville, sets forth his views and assertions of fact concerning some of his workers’ ongoing strike. The plant, the sole industry in the town of 3,000, has been closed for that reason since Aug. 2. Greenleaf, proud of his company’s “responsibility and regard for its employees” and distressed by how events have turned — in his view, his plant was attacked by a union mob — writes, “More relief funds have gone into this city for the support of this ‘strike’ than throughout the entire previous years of the depression.” Greenleaf says he won’t resume business “until we can operate with a reasonable certainty of having a happy, contented, loyal group of workers none of whom will be subjected to insult, threat and intimidation at any time.”

Oct. 10, 1983, in The Star: An English Tudor-style four-bedroom home at 500 Knox Avenue in Anniston is listed for sale at $57,000. Also this date: A wire story on the resignation of President Reagan’s Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, recounts some of the statements that have gotten him into trouble during his time in the spotlight. Among them, from November 1981: “I never use the words Democrats and Republicans. It’s liberals and Americans.”
