A look back at this date in history
Oct. 9, 1933, in The Star: Building from the huge retail shopping turnout of Saturday, the Anniston business community is “swinging into line with the rest of America in the great ‘Now is the time to buy’ movement.” Said local business leader Charles F. Varn, “We are attacking the depression with the weapons of salesmanship .... The present nation-wide campaign is simply a drive to get people to buy the things they would have been buying during the last three years or so if it had not been for their fear complex.”
Oct. 9, 1983: It’s a time of birth and death in Talladega these days. Last weekend the classic old Carnegie Library was reopened as the Jemison-Carnegie Heritage Hall to spotlight local history — of which Talladega has much. But last night the north side of the city’s historic square was damaged when a fire gutted the Fishers of Men bookstore. Smoke and water also damaged the old Martin Theater next door, where a gospel singing was taking place. Also this date: A crowd in the hundreds lined Noble Street yesterday morning to view the Anniston Centennial Parade and bid adieu to a week of themed celebrations that marked the temporal milestone. The 40-minute procession of bands and floats drew “a surprisingly large Saturday morning crowd,” according to the writer. It was a pleasant end to a celebration for which community participation in general did not meet expectations, particularly compared to the 75th anniversary of 1958. “All the world is more jaded than it was 25 years ago,” said Anniston businessman George Deyo.
