Oct. 7, 1933, in The Star: Dick Strickland's Alexandria Trojans scored another victory Friday afternoon when they routed Piedmont 24 to 0 on Piedmont's field. It was a good afternoon for local high school fans all around as the Calhoun County High School Yellowjackets beat Southside 12 to 0 and the Anniston Bulldogs beat Jacksonville High School at Johnston Field 28 to 6. Medders made three of Anniston's touchdowns and Pennington scored the other. [First names were not given in standard game accounts of this era.] Meanwhile, on the national sports scene, the New York Giants defeated the Washington Senators 4 to 3 today at Griffith Stadium to win the 1933 World Series in the fifth game. Also this date: Crowds of shoppers from here and from surrounding counties filled downtown Anniston today to a degree even greater than Christmas throngs of recent years, police said. The 69th Coast Artillery Band of Fort McClellan gave a concert on the post office lawn to add to the festive air.

Oct. 7, 1983, in The Star: The Alabama Shakespeare Festival's production of Mass Appeal will be performed next month as a selection in the 1983-84 season of the Indiana Repertory Theater. Martin Platt will direct. "It took a lot of wheeling and dealing, but we're very happy," said ASF Managing Director Jim Volz. Opening night of the show's five-week run will be Nov. 4. Also this date: John B. LaGarde and Bill Neal won the Thomas E. Kilby Jr. awards for their contributions to industry in 1983 at the eighth annual Industry on Parade banquet last night.

1858 — The fifth debate between Illinois senatorial candidates Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas took place in Galesburg.
1960 — Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy and Republican opponent Richard M. Nixon held their second televised debate, in Washington, D.C.
