Oct. 6, 1933, in The Star: Tomorrow's downtown Anniston retail shopping extravaganza is being pumped up with a front-page article explaining why the day is expected to be a success: "Saturday's Buy Now campaign is expected to be the fuse that touches off a new era of prosperity among Anniston merchants and at the same time saves customers countless dollars on merchandise sold cheaply because it was purchased before higher prices set in. Throngs such as Anniston has not witnessed for many months are expected to jam the business district tomorrow." The Star has been making special effort to solicit advertising and will print thousands of extra copies for shoppers' convenience. Also this date: Anniston police have been instructed to start enforcing the law that requires motorists to come to a complete stop before they cross "the boulevard" [i.e., Quintard Avenue]. And furthermore: A regular cooking column called "Sister Mary's Kitchen" today contains recipes for Brunswick stew using squirrels and for squirrel pie.

Oct. 6, 1983, in The Star: Founded in 1976, the Northeast Alabama Rose chapter has blossomed from 17 interested individuals to 80 in the ensuing years. J. Lamar Bennett, publicity chairman of the chapter's annual rose show and competition, is inviting everyone to the event at Jacksonville State University this weekend. Also this date: Home computers have penetrated the retail market sufficiently that a multi-part series on how to choose and use them is being published in The Star.

On Oct. 6 in
1927 — The era of talking pictures arrived with the opening of The Jazz Singer, a movie starring Al Jolson that featured both silent and sound-synchronized scenes.
1958 — The nuclear submarine USS Seawolf surfaced after spending 60 days submerged.
1981 — Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was shot to death by extremists while reviewing a military parade.
