A look back at this date in history
Oct. 4, 1933, in The Star: Officials at Fort McClellan are warning the locals to keep off the southeastern portion of the reservation tomorrow, as pistol firing practice will be held from 8 until noon. “There is great danger from bullets that glance or stray from the target,” the article helpfully points out. Also this date: An advertisement from First National Bank of Anniston [founded in 1883, it eventually morphed into Wachovia or whoever they are now] states that it has $300,000 in capital and a $150,000. In other money matters, an illustration using coins explains how as a result of recently rising prices, an October 1933 dollar buys slightly less than a dollar of eight months ago, but because of overall deflation — falling prices due to depression — today’s dollar buys noticeably more than it did in 1926.
Oct. 4, 1983, in The Star: The only head coach the Donoho School football team has ever known, Cliff Grubbs, announced his resignation yesterday afternoon, effective immediately. Assistant coach Mike Patterson will become the new head coach of the Anniston college preparatory school. Athough the mid-1970s brought some encouraging success to the young team, the past several seasons have produced have produced more and more losses. Also this date: Director Ed Horner did the best he could with limited response to the mass casting call, but the Anniston centennial pageant play was pulled off last night without anyone falling off the stage. The historically somewhat accurate play was put on outdoors at Anniston Memorial Stadium.
