Oct. 3, 1933, in The Star: Cowboy star Tom Mix, in town with his horse, Tony, and band of riders, was introduced by Anniston Kiwanian Raymond P. Wheeler prior to Mix’s impromptu speech before the civic club’s luncheon at the Alabama Hotel. “The young people of America and the world made more out of Tom Mix than Tom Mix could have made out of himself,” he told the men. And according to an account on the editorial page, Mix stopped by the Anniston Star office, too: “We were delighted with the audience he was accorded yesterday, and so was Mr. Mix, who paid his tribute to the several thousand who gathered in front of The Star office to greet their hero.” [Mix was 53 at this time and near the end of an acclaimed career — he died in 1940 — but in 1932 was prominent again for the movie Destry Rides Again.]

Oct. 3, 1983, in The Star: The Holiday Apartments on Christine Avenue may be destined to become Anniston’s first apartment-to-condominium conversion project, but one of the developers, Terry Powell of Columbia, S.C., seems to be going out of his way to reassure the 27 mostly elderly residents of the mini-community that they won’t have to buy a unit if they don’t wish to. Howell Realty will continue to manage the property, for which individual rents range from $225 to $320 per month.
