A look back at this date in history

10-02-2008

Oct. 2, 1933, in The Star: Following its annual custom, The Anniston Star will stage a World Series matinee during each afternoon of the baseball classic, starting tomorrow afternoon at 12:30. Assembled fans will hear play-by-play descriptions of the games from a platform in front of the Star building, the accounts originating directly from the ball parks over wires specially leased from United Press. [The Giants would defeat the Senators 4-2 in the first game.] Also this date: Five days in advance, an article and an advertisement are preparing shoppers for “Alabama Day,” when virtually all merchants and business men of Anniston will cooperate to provide the lowest prices of the season on everything they sell. The rationale is that “booming business is sending prices up,” therefore consumers will welcome the deals.

Oct. 2, 1983, in The Star: An event as important as a wedding often flows better with a planner, and for 35 years in Anniston that planner has been Frances Couch. At age 75, the city’s leading businesswoman has overseen thousands of weddings since the year she and her late husband, Fred O. Couch Sr., started a bridal registry at their jewelry store on East 10th Street. Also this date: As part of the city’s centennial celebration yesterday, George Deyo and Lowndes Butler, descendants of Gen. Daniel Tyler and Samuel Noble, respectively, unveiled a plaque on the building erected on the first lot sold downtown after Anniston was opened to the public in 1883.
