Sept. 30, 1933, in The Star: A cartoon by Herblock on the editorial page shows a little man in a swami costume labeled "U.S." looking vexed as he stands in front of an imposing set of doors labeled "Closed Banks." The headline at the top of the cartoon says "Open Sesame!" Also this date: In high school football action yesterday afternoon at Oxford, the Yellowjackets pounded Ranburne 46-0. The pass combinations of Rutledge to Shamblee and Rutledge to Sparks netted the Yellowjackets several nice gains during the game.

Sept. 30, 1983, in The Star: The City of Oxford yesterday accepted a bid of $17,000 on a road project that will improve access to the old Southern Mill plant, set to open Nov. 1 as the Olde Mill Antique Mall. The improvements will include a 400-foot deceleration and turn lane off Alabama 21 South. Collateral Investment Co., which bought the former textile mill two years ago, is the mall's developer. Huey Burrows is its manager. Also this date: The Calhoun County school board voted yesterday to buy 27 acres across from Alexandria School for $64,500. Known as the Frank Little property, the land will be used for future development.

On Sept. 30 in
1846 — Boston dentist William Morton used ether as an anesthetic for the first time as he extracted an ulcerated tooth from merchant Eben Frost.
1938 — After co-signing the Munich Agreement allowing Nazi annexation of Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain praised the accord on his return home, saying, "I believe it is peace for our time."
1952 — The motion picture This Is Cinerama, which introduced the triple-camera, triple-projector Cinerama widescreen process — as movie producers sought to provide images that TV could not — premiered at the Broadway Theatre in New York.
