A look back at this date in history

09-28-2008

Sept. 28, 1933, in The Star: Two of the three units of the Standard Coosa Thatcher Company in Piedmont were operating again today, putting 600 back to work, and the third is expected to be placed in operation next week, said Mayor George P. Haslam, plant manager. The mill was closed down two weeks due to a strike; of about 700 total employees on the payroll, 275 are union.

Sept. 28, 1983, in The Star: Jim Morrow is going to close his furniture store at 1701 S. Quintard by the end of the year and turn the property over to Haverty’s, the businessman said yesterday. He said even though he was making good money at that location, which only opened a couple of years ago, Haverty’s offered him a deal he just couldn’t turn down. It’s the second furniture store transition this year; Maxwell’s at 930 Noble Street is about to become Jefferson Furniture Co. Coincidentally, during Maxwell’s dozen or so years on Noble its neighbor across 10th Street has always been Haverty’s. “This is one of the few remaining stores we had in a downtown area, and we’ve found it’s very profitable to move from downtown to the suburban areas,” said Haverty’s manager Ben Tipton. [Haverty’s had been downtown since 1950, the year it moved into the building where Sears had done business for the previous 10 years.. A new building at 17th and Noble, now the county administration building, became Sears’ home in 1950.] Also this date: It’s one of the great Anniston Star leads: “The world’s oldest profession will soon become the city’s newest crime, due to action taken Tuesday by the Anniston City Council.” It appeared at the top of a story telling us that prior to this point, prostitution in the city was technically not illegal.
