A look back at this date in history
Sept. 27, 1933, in The Star: A First Methodist Church committee, presided over by Luther B. Liles, is working out plans for a mass meeting of the membership of the church and its Sunday School. The membership of the former numbers 1,200-1,300, while the membership of the latter numbers about 900; most of those, of course, are members of the church, but about 300 are not. The large number of persons expected makes it necessary to have the meeting this Sunday at the Ritz Theater, one block south of the church building. The program, to which unaffiliated Methodists of the city are also invited, will be a mix of lay-led worship and choral music.
Sept. 27, 1983, in The Star: SouthTrust Bank continued the celebration of Anniston’s centennial, as well as its own, with the planting of a 20-foot oak in the Quintard Avenue median in front of the bank this morning. University president Dr. Theron Montgomery turned the shovel while other dignitaries looked on. Also this date: Michael Lusk, who comes from the Hollingsworth community near Jacksonville, has made his neighbors proud by being sworn in yesterday as an assistant district attorney for Calhoun and Cleburne counties. He joins Joseph Hubbard and Larry Warren on the staff of District Attorney Robert Field. And furthermore: Talladega Mayor Larry Barton, sensitive to the opinions of his city’s deaf and blind community, has sent a letter to President Reagan asking him to remove James Watt from his post Interior Secretary. Watt, of course, is the official whose ill-phrased quip recently mocked the value of diversity on government panels.
