A look back at this date in history

09-26-2008

Sept. 26, 1933, in The Star: Two all-star baseball teams representing the best men from the civic clubs of Anniston and Gadsden are getting set to do battle against each other at Johnston Field tomorrow afternoon. The cause is for charity, specifically for buying lunches for under-nourished poor children in Anniston schools. The Gadsden team is graciously bearing all of its own expenses on account of this goal. Also this date: In a Civitan Club speech yesterday, State Senator Dr. Jesse L. Wikle affirmed his view that all cities should be led by the city manager form of government and that universities should have unique curricula that train men for the public management position. Dr. Wikle, an Anniston businessman and community leader for more than 50 years, is a former mayor of the city.

Sept. 26, 1983, in The Star: An interesting and thorough article explaining the concept behind and the history of “middle schools” — as opposed to junior high schools, or nothing at all — springs from a visit made by reporter D. Morgan McVicar to Martin Luther King Middle School in Atlanta. Principal Robert Dixon emphasizes that a middle school must have programs all its own, not just former “junior high” programs bumped down a year.
