A look back at this date in history
Sept. 25, 1933, in The Star: In Oxford, Mrs. J. Fred Gurley entertained a group of children in her home recently to celebrate the third birthday of her daughter, Betty Sue. Games and a contest were enjoyed on the lawn; party favors were toy wrist watches. Also this date: From the sports wire we learn that leaders of the Big Six Football Conference, made up of strong Midwestern teams, are prohibiting radio broadcasts from their playing fields this season. The schools don’t want any competition to the live paid attendance at the events.
Sept. 25, 1983, in The Star: World War One veterans are fading from the scene, but one of them who recently celebrated his 88th birthday is Daniel Nealy of Anniston. Nealy’s guardian, Henry Graham, is now enlisting Nealy in the American Legion. He would like Nealy to be in the VFW but the local post is segregated and Calhoun County does not have a black VFW post. The American Legion Kelly Stedham Post 322 said it has two WWI veterans. Nealy moved from Atlanta to Anniston in 1931 and over time helped construct Cobb High School, the Federal Building annex and Cooper Elementary School. Also this date: “When a city begins a new century, it is not an exercise in futility for its citizens to begin thinking about what they want their community to be like in the next 100 years,” states the introduction on today’s Insight page to a short questionnaire the editors invite their readers to fill out. The questions deal with how people perceive Anniston and the direction they’d likethe city to go in the future; results of the unscientific survey will be published Oct. 9.
