A look back at this date in history
Sept. 24, 1933, in The Star: A final report on the number of children who have started school in the Anniston city system gives the figure of 4,550 — and this despite the fact that nearly 200 children were kept off the rolls because they weren’t six years old on or before July 1, the new state-mandated cut-off point. The number of teachers employed is 125, creating a mathematical average of just under 37 students per teacher. Also this date: The Anniston Central Labor Council will return to its renovated quarters at 9181/2 Noble St. for its meeting tomorrow night. And furthermore: A dramatic full-page advertisement, showing a drawing of an eagle, lists names and addresses of several local businesses pledging to abide by the N. R. A. code and not indiscriminately raise prices. Speaking of ads, much space is devoted to “notes of appreciation” from endurance driver John J. King to the individual businesses who supplied him with products and services during his time in Anniston.
Sept. 24, 1983, in The Star: Talladega’s ill fortune was good for Anniston last night as the Bulldogs rolled to a 28-13 win over the Tigers in high school football action. Marcus James returned the opening kickoff 51 yards and only three plays later Anniston had its first score. After the ensuing kickoff, the Tigers mishandled the ball, which ended up on the five-yard line. On the next play a Tiger fumble in the end zone was pounced on by Michael Wallace, giving Anniston two touchdowns with only 1:42 elapsed on the clock. An 84-yard punt return by Isiah Carter in the second quarter sealed the deal for Anniston, although Talladega would later come within a touchdown of at least tying the score.
